Just as you elect local councillors to look after your local community and your Westminster MP to represent you nationally, you elect MEPs to represent you in Europe. The European Parliament is the only directly elected international parliament in the world. EU citizens are free to study, work and live anywhere in the European Union. These freedoms are not automatic. They have been introduced by laws made at European level. For more than half a century the countries of the European Union have been living together in peace. There are now more than 490 million people in 27 member...

MEPs can help with problems you may have had when on holiday or working in Europe – for example with qualifications, customs, buying goods and services. If your business is having difficulties with European regulations your MEP may be able to help. MEPs cannot take up issues which arise from national legislation - these are best dealt with by your local MP. Glenis is regularly contacted by individual constituents asking for assistance or advice over a particular problem they are experiencing. We always do our best to help. However, in many cases, there are other organisations which are better...

Glenis was elected as Leader of the European Parliamentary Labour Party in January 2009 and re-elected following the European elections in June 2009. Glenis is a full member of the important and influential Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee. She is in the thick of the action to combat climate change, as it is increasingly acknowledged that environmental measures need to be co-ordinated at the European level because climate change and pollution don't respect our national borders. Responsibilities of the committee include environmental protection measures, regulating pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, and taking measures to ensure our food is safe...

A Written Declaration in the European Parliament is similar to an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons. It is a policy statement sponsored by a number of MEPs, which is put before the Parliament for signature. If other MEPs agree with the statement they can sign up. For a Written Declaration to become the official position of the Parliament, more than half of all MEPs (currently 393) have to sign. This happens rarely, but one recent example, which Glenis signed, is the Written Declaration on the Banning of Seal products in the EU, which attracted 425 signatures and...

The European Parliament welcomes visitors, but there is heavy demand for places now there are 27 members states. For information on how to arrange a visit go to http://www.europarl.eu.int/parliament/public/staticDisplay.do?id=50 or phone John Fordham in the Visitors’ Service on 00322 284 3841 (fax 00322 284 3530) The Parliament sessions in Strasbourg, which take place approximately monthly are very oversubscribed, but Brussels is easier, especially if you are willing to go outside session time. The Visitors’ Service standard visit lasts for 2 hours (3 hours if the Parliament is sitting). It consists...
