It is shocking that frontline staff such as doctors, nurses and security personnel often suffer from violence at the hands of members of the public (so-called third party violence). The British Medical Association has estimated that half of all doctors have suffered violence or abuse from patients. In my Health and Safety report I proposed that the social partners (trade unions and businesses) should conclude a formal agreement on how to tackle workplace violence and failing this legislation should be brought forward clearly clarifying employers' responsibilities. Unfortunately, yet again the Tories and Lib Dems combined to vote this...

“The best possible Christmas present” That’s how local Euro MP Glenis Willmott has described a decisive step taken this week to improve access to AIDS medicines in the developing world. UNITAID, the international health financing agency, has given the go ahead to create a “patent pool” which could radically improve the availability of medicines. Speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg this week, the East Midlands Labour MEP explained that the move should bring down the cost of generic drugs. “It will also make easier, the combination of drugs from different makers into fixed-dose or one pill combinations.” As...

Glenis is supporting the Changing Places campaign. Thousands of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities cannot use standard accessible toilets. There are almost no public Changing Places toilets in the UK. Providing these toilets in public places would make a dramatic difference to the lives of thousands of people who need these facilities. The Changing Places Consortium is a group of organisations working to support the rights of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities to access their community. The Changing Places Consortium is campaigning for Changing Places toilets to be installed in big public places. Find out how...

Glenis has long been campaigning for the seat of the European Parliament to be in Brussels. Strasbourg costs £200 million a year and leaves a massive carbon footprint. The arrangement for the European Parliament to sit in Strasbourg 12 times a year is an obligation in the European treaties. John Major made it binding at the European Summit in Edinburgh in 1992. The European Parliament does not have the power to decide to abandon Strasbourg - it must be decided by a unanimous vote by all 27 member states. Labour MEPs are opposed to the Strasbourg travelling circus. It is...
