The United Kingdom has a justified reputation in Europe for its standards of animal welfare. Very few issues raise such strong emotions, and since I became an MEP many constituents have contacted me about one aspect or other of the way we treat animals. See below for "Animal Matters", my latest newsletters on this issue. Animal Matters Summer 2009 Animal Matters Spring 2008...

As a member of the European Parliament's Environment Committee Glenis Willmott is involved in helping to tackle what is arguably the greatest challenge we face in the 21st century - climate change. The challenge of climate change Dealing with climate change encompasses many policy areas, notably energy, transport, security and development. The evidence that human activities are primarily responsible for climate change is now irrefutable. Evidence suggests that temperatures could rise by up to 6.4°C by the end of this century and the knock on effects of this would include rising sea levels, rising frequency of high temperature extremes,...

The European Union is the world's leading donor of development aid. In 2001 it committed over €9 billion from the EU budget alone. The EU is also the world's largest provider of humanitarian aid, working in areas of conflict and natural disaster. Labour MEPs are extremely active at European level to ensure that these funds are spent on projects which alleviate poverty in the developing world and promote international justice and human rights.
British people have won major gains from new EU consumer laws. From buying cars and shopping by mail order or over the internet to combating timeshare touts, Labour MEPs have been at the forefront of new laws to protect and improve your rights. An end to rogue traders and bully-boy salesmen: The Unfair Commercial Practices Directive introduces new protections against aggressive selling methods and misleading by omission. It also outlaws practices such as fake prize draws or bogus closing down sales and it includes a general duty to trade fairly, which will pick up any unlawful practices that these protections...

EU funding is awarded by the European Commission to help finance projects or activities which promote EU policies. EU funding covers a diverse number of fields including education, protection of the environment, humanitarian aid, business development and research. Whilst certain grants are restricted to designated geographical areas, others are not location specific. Structural funding and the East Midlands The East Midlands has greatly benefited from European money made available to the regions of the EU under 4 different funding programmes, known collectively as the Structural Funds.
For Labour MEPs the EU is much more than a free market for goods and services. Over the years we have worked to improve working conditions and set down minimum levels of workplace rights for all British and European workers. One of the first acts of the Labour government after 1997 was to sign the European Social Chapter guaranteeing these rights. Now you are covered wherever you work in the EU. Know your rights: working hours and holidays Shorter working hours: The 'long hours' culture dogs British industry, leading to ill health and stress as well as taking...

The European Parliament continues to be at the forefront of combating discrimination and inequality in Europe and further a field. The year 2007 was declared the European Year of Equal Opportunities and culminated in the signing of the Charter of Fundamental Rights in December. The Charter outlines the need for: • Equality between men and women • The prohibition of discrimination based on any ground such as sex, race, colour, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion or belief, political or any other opinion, membership of a national minority, property, birth, disability, age or sexual orientation. • Respect for...

Much of the current Equality and workers’ rights legislation we now take for granted has come from Europe. Equal pay for women workers was included as one of the provisions of the first EU Treaty in 1957 – 13 years before the UK adopted its own legislation on equal pay! An end to unequal pay • Equal pay: We’ve had equal pay legislation for nearly 40 years. But too many companies carried on classifying men’s and women’s jobs differently, paying higher wages to men for doing similar skilled jobs to women. That is why Labour MEPs backed laws guaranteeing...
