Get off to a flying start and check your rights

As thousands of holidaymakers across the region prepare to jet off to European destinations for their summer breaks, local MEP Glenis willmott is advising them to spend a few minutes checking out their rights.

The Labour MEP said. “Just as you check your passport, your insurance, and your holiday booking, it’s a good idea to check what rights you have as a passenger on airlines within Europe.   New European laws brought in over the last year or so give passengers far more opportunities to get a fair deal, and airlines have a legal obligation to advise you of your rights and where to complain if things go wrong.”

“For example, compensation may be available for a variety of situations, including loss of luggage, long delays or cancellations. There are also laws to protect people with reduced mobility, and those on package holidays.”

“The information is available on the internet at http://ec.europa.eu/transport/passengers/air/air_en.htm , or you can use the Europe Direct freephone number 00 800 6 7 8 9 10 11.   Anyone having problems getting the information can contact my office on 0115 922 9717.”

Glenis concluded.  “European laws are there to help you.  So my advice to holidaymakers is – check it out – just in case things go wrong.”
