Glenis Willmott has received recognition for her work in helping to raise awareness of cervical cancer.
She has been awarded one of the Pearl of Wisdom Awards given by the European Cervical Cancer Association, for her work, in particular as one of the Co-Chairs of the European Parliament’s Cervical Cancer Prevention Group.
Since she became an MEP in 2006, Glenis has actively campaigned for greater awareness of the disease, taking the issue up with European and Westminster decision makers, while also supporting organisations like Jo’s Trust, a cervical cancer awareness charity based in Northamptonshire.
Glenis said. “I’m naturally extremely proud to accept this award. In doing so, I do want to pay credit to the many other people who have campaigned in their own way at all levels.”
“It’s important that we continue to campaign to raise awareness, and to encourage early screening as well as the widest possible application of the newly available vaccine.”
“Far too many women have already died as a result of cervical cancer, yet it is a disease which we now largely have the ability to prevent.”
The awards will be given at a dinner that is being held in the European Parliament in Brussels on the evening of Tuesday 26 January.
