How the EU responds will define the fortunes of the British people for generations.

Glenis Willmott, Labour MEP for the East Midlands and Labour’s Leader in Europe, will deliver her keynote speech to the Labour Party Conference on Monday 26th September 2011.

In her speech Glenis will tell conference that the crisis in Europe is not just an economic crisis but also a crisis for social democracy and that now is not the time to turn our backs on the EU but how the EU responds will shape the fortunes of the British people for generations.

In her speech Glenis will say: “It has not been an easy twelve months in Brussels – first the deepening financial crisis in Greece and then the bailouts for Ireland and Portugal. The implications of this turmoil for the future of the EU are immense and how the EU responds will define the fortunes of our continent for generations to come.

“What is clear is that the EU must change. There are real and crucial lessons that must be learnt. Let’s not turn our backs [on the EU]. We must produce a new vision…international in scale, since globally produced problems can actually only be solved globally.”
