The ongoing Tory war over Europe has now moved to the East Midlands, says one of the Region’s Euro MPs.
Glenis Willmott has highlighted a battle of words between two of the Region’s leading Tory politicians – Rushcliffe’s MP Ken Clarke, and East Midlands MEP Roger Helmer – heightened by Mr Helmer’s recent comments on his blog, ( http://rogerhelmermep.wordpress.com/2009/10/03/so-why-start-the-row-ken/ ), where he says that Mr Clarke should “shut up” about Europe.
Glenis said. “The arguments within the Conservative Party over Europe were instrumental in the demise of John Major’s government, and have festered on since then. It seems that, having failed to learn the lessons of history, the Tories are intent on repeating them.”
“This is not just the usual Tory bickering. It highlights absolutely fundamental disagreements about the future of the country, and our place in the world.”
